A Five-member delegation of Patiala municipal councillors, supported by 26 members of the ruling SAD-BJP, today vowed to oust Mayor Ajit Pal Singh Kohli from the post. The councillors alleged that Kohli had misguided the party high command that the matter of his removal had been resolved while nothing had been agreed upon.
According to sources, as many as 26 councillors met on Wednesday and vested their powers in a five-member committee.
Led by Jaspal Singh, the disgruntled councillors have decided to hold daily protests outside the municipal corporation office from October 1.
“We would not lift the dharna until Kohli is removed from the post of mayor as he has brought bad repute to the party,” councillors alleged.
The mayor, meanwhile, took a safe stand and said his work would speak for him and rubbished the allegations levied against him. “We have collected Rs 3 crore in the last 3 months from house tax alone in addition to finalising a cattle pond. A drive against stray cattle and dog sterilisation scheme would start soon on the pattern of Chandigarh,” he said.
“I am not bothered about what the councillors say as I have already spoken to the party high command about the issue and there is nothing left to discuss,” the mayor told Newsline.
Kohli, meanwhile, said the councillors should have taken up their grievances with the party president, instead of resorting to actions that “lower the party’s image in the public eye”.
