District Collector Chandrakant Dalvi, today appealed to the citizens not to visit swine flu vaccination camps organised by private clubs and NGOs.

Stressing the importance of hospital supervision and monitoring by expert doctors,Dalvi said,“Vaccination is important. However,it is important to get it done under the supervision of a doctor and a hospital in order to avoid side-effects- the proportion of which is still very small. For the high risk group consisting of pregnant women, people suffering from uncontrolled diabetes,HIV,it is mandatory to take the medicine through injection, which should not be done in a swine flu vaccination camp.”

Dalvi, who visited The Indian Express-Loksatta office said,“Private societies and organisations who wish to take part in such camps should do it through a hospital.”

Last year, the district administration had opened 223 screening centres across the district out of which 206 are currently operating. “We had created four units for the purpose of monitoring. The rural unit has 24 hospitals and 96 Primary Healthcare Centres, including Aundh Hospital and Command Hospital, and they have a combined capacity of 59 beds. The PMC area has 44 screening units,15 hospitals and 116 beds, while the PCMC has 37 screening units, six private hospitals and 85 beds,” Dalvi added.

Dalvi was accompanied by Dr Anand Phadke of SEHAT,Dr Sharad Agharkhedkar, president,IMA city unit. “Providing vaccination to five lakh children would cost Rs 5 crore, and in order to control the spread, the district administration should undertake vaccination drives at schools and colleges,” said Dr Phadke.

It was also stated at that meeting that the chances of side effects after taking nasal vaccine was one in 10 lakh. “That is why the vaccines should be taken under the supervision of medical experts and in hospitals,” said Dr Agharkhedar and Dr Phadke.
