District courts to shift to Sector 43 building

After much delay in the shifting the District Court Complex of Chandigarh, the courts will finally be shifting to the new building in Sector 43 from Sector 17 next week. The inauguration of the new building has been scheduled for January 25 by the Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Shivraj V Patil. The courts, however, will be shifting to the new building on January 28, Monday. All the courts on Wednesday received a formal notification for the shifting of courts.

Amidst the preparations for the inauguration of the court, the issue of allotment of chambers to the lawyers has become controversial.

President of the District Bar Association, NK Nanda, said, "We have released a list of 740 chambers in total. The regular members have been provided the ground, first and second floors while those who are non-practicing or have chambers in the Punjab and Haryana High Court are not entitled for a chamber in the district court. We are also planning to have the draw of lots for the chambers of the January 28 but it is yet to be confirmed".

SS Bhullar, a convener of chamber construction, said that lawyers who live in far-off areas and and those who were not able to pay the fee for the chambers on time have been sidelined.
