Diwali damper: Hospitals get 92 burn,eye injury cases

While the maximum number of cases was received at Sector 16’s Government Multi Speciality Hospital (GMSH) — a total of 56 — those at the PGI were more severe in nature. The PGI Advanced Eye Centre alone received 16 such cases. Those injured included a five-year-old and a 15-year-old girl.

However,9 of these 16 patients,who were admitted to PGI till Thursday evening,did not sustain injuries while bursting crackers,they were mere spectators.

A four-year-old boy from Mullanpur Garibdas village,Gaganpreet,suffered burn injuries on his face,which damaged his eyes. Gaganpreet had stepped out of his house on Thursday when a cracker hit him in the face,said his mother. Doctors said that as he could not open his eyes,they cannot predict anything about his vision.

In another case,15-year-old Monika from Hisar was sitting with her grandmother when her siblings were bursting crackers nearby. Suddenly,a cracker hit her in the eye. She was taken to a nearby doctor,who referred her to PGI.

Karnal resident Om Pal was on his way home on Wednesday night when a cracker hit his eye. His chances of regaining vision were bleak,said doctors.

Diwali celebrations also proved to be a nightmare for 18-year-old Dharmender from Palsora village. On his way home,Dharmender was hit by a cracker in the eye. He later underwent a surgery at the PGI.

Meanwhile,out of the 56 cases received at GMSH-16,while 40 were of minor burn injuries,16 were of eye injuries. Out of these 16,three were referred to the PGI. The remaining 53 patients were discharged,said Deputy Medical Superintendent Dr G Dewan.

At the Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 32,while an 18-year-old from Kaithal in Haryana was operated upon for an eye injury,22 others were discharged after treatment,said Medical Superintendent Dr Vipin Kaushal. This also included four cases of road accidents due to Diwali celebrations. Bursting of firecrackers also caused deafness and tinnitus among seven persons.

Meanwhile,the youngest victim of the Diwali celebrations was a three-year-old girl who suffered injuries in her ears. She,however,did not suffer any hearing loss.

51 injured in Panchkula

PANCHKULA: As many as 51 people sustained injuries while bursting crackers in Panchkula. All the injured,mostly children,were treated at the General Hospital in Sector 6 and discharged after administering first aid. “Since Wednesday evening,we have treated 51 people,who had received injuries due to firecrackers. Out of these,while 14 had eye injuries,the rest had burn injuries,” said Panchkula Senior Medical Officer Dr Sanjeev Trehan.
