After malls, offices and hotels, it is time for residential areas in the cybercity to go Wi-Fi.
Leading realtor DLF is planning to provide wireless Internet access in its residential zones in DLF phase I, II, III and IV. The system will be in place by mid-2010, say sources.
“It is too early to comment on the scheme,” said an official. “We are trying to work out the feasibility with a wireless broadband provider. The DLF has zeroed in on M/s Ozone Networks Private Limited. We will work out the modalities and the cost of the project.”
Sources in the DLF maintained that it is not a very costly project and the company might charge a very nominal amount for the added service. In the next segment, it will introduce the facility in Phase V. Once the service provider is finalised, DLF plans to involve the residents, the official said.
The move is meant to minimise the inconvenience faced by Internet users due to frequent server failures and network problems. “The residents will be able to access high speed Internet anywhere within the premises developed by DLF,” added the official.
Asked if any approval was needed from the state government, a DLF official said all approvals are entirely in the scope of the service provider.
However, residents are skeptical about the move. “Most residents have their own Internet connections,” said Kittu Mathur, president, RWA, Ridgewood Estate, DLF -IV. “Security is a concern since the wireless network will be available to everyone. Also, the private player might send us hefty bills.”
