New Delhi, September 26:: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's remarks that people of the country "deeply love" US President George W Bush evoked strong criticism on Friday with parties from both the Right and the Left attacking it as "unbecoming" of his office and "sychophancy".

While BJP advised the Prime Minister not be carried away by the charm of Bush, Left parties told Singh that the popularity of US President was dipping rapidly in his country when he made such a remark.

"Diplomacy should not be carried to the extent of sycophancy. The fact remains that the country is divided on the nuclear deal," BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy said.

CPI National Secretary D Raja wondered how the Prime Minister could make such comments which "do not augur well" for his position.

"The Americans are hostile to Bush and they have rejected him and his policies. When Singh is saying that Indians love Bush, it is unbecoming of his office," he said.

RSP General Secretary T J Chandrachoodan was of the view that Singh was praising a man whom the Indians hold responsible for many ills of the world.

"His comments were against the popular mood in this country. He praised Bush to get the deal through in any way. Seen in this perspective, the remarks were against diplomatic etiquette, political decency and morality," he said.

Forward Bloc Secretary G Deverajan said the Prime Minister's statement depicted the attitude of a slave. "Singh has shown enormous courage by saying that Indians love a President whose country hates him. Only a person who does not have any contact with people can say this," he said.

The reaction by the parties came as a response to Singh's remarks during his meeting with Bush in Washington while praising him for his "important" and "historic" role in forging several bilateral initiatives including the nuclear deal.

Hypocrisy by sabtu enam on 2008-09-27 09:39:57.929871+05:30
At times due to fear and selfishness, victims call their perpetrators saviours. The world is in the hands of terrorist leaders who call other innocent as trrrorists.
YES We really love BUSH by RajGupta on 2008-09-27 09:34:48.965288+05:30
It is only one man - George Bush who is true follower of Bhagwat Gita. he has entered every dangerous country to chse terrorists at great cost to his nation - BUT there is no single attachk against USA during his tenure from AlQueda after 9/11. We really really love to have him in India as the leader.
Does it matter? by Rahul Kolhe on 2008-09-27 00:53:12.574218+05:30
Does it matter? whether Indians love Bush or not? In international politics you have to make such statements to bring two countries closer in business. I don't see any wrong when PM of India said this to President of US. USA is not an enemy, it could be our international friend.
India USA Nuclear DEAL becomes Operational by Chinnakonda K Radhamohan on 2008-09-26 21:19:30.062727+05:30
The 2.5 Lakh Indo Americans living in USA truly KLOVE President Bush for all he has done for India's sake in this Nuclear Deal and brought India out of the Nuclear Parahia list of countries. All Indians in India are going to be immensely benefited with this Deal in addition to all Indo Americans like myself who work for companies like GE Infrastructure
PM criticised by Shashi Thapliyal on 2008-09-26 19:41:26.40873+05:30
I praise Bush because he had pulled the Pak army without a round fired. Can anyone from left or right show this charishma?
George Bush is THE best president from Indian perspective by Jay on 2008-09-26 19:37:40.726536+05:30
So far Indian interest is concerned; G W Bush is THE best president of US. Keeping the compulsions of international diplomacy and domestic politics in mind, NO other US president even considered giving India so much importance and assistance. In fact Bush erased the long standing policies of US to equate India with Pakistan and started upgrading India as per China. Bush’s policy of tackling Islamic terrorism is also a great help for India to re-think its own policy towards Islamic terrorism in India and internationally (although many of our politicians will never acknowledge that in fear of reprisal of Muslim vote bank). I do not support many of his policies (when I evaluate him from American perspective), BUT as a patriotic Indian I do love, yes love, that leader even when it’s becoming a fashion to criticize him to become an “intellectual”.

Just another case of Hair Splitting.True President Bush will go down in the history as perhaps the least popular President but give the Gentleman his due-he has indeed taken enough pains to improve Indo-American relations and undoubtedly the Nuclear Deal,God Willing if it goes through, will be a landmark of great cooperation between the World,s two greatest democracies. It is just a manner of speech and expression and the Politicians from the opposition should graciously avoid sitting over in judgement over the usage of the word Love.Lets us be magnanimous to Mr Bush in his last days of the Presidency.Look at the Lavish praise by President Zaradari on Ms Sarah Palin-The Mullahs Could have issued a Fatwa in his country but they were wise enough to understand that such statements are mere PR Excercises and no breath need be wasted on it.If It were the former PM Atalji he would in all liklihood come out with a poem in the praise of President Bush as niceties never kill anyone.
Monmohan praises Bush by Prabhat Sen Sarma on 2008-09-26 19:19:50.787525+05:30
I do not like Monmohan Singh at all. I do not like his boss too.
What about Bin Laden Mr. MM Singh by Shankar on 2008-09-26 19:17:14.179073+05:30
Yes, Congress Love Bush, Country Love Bush because Congress got a heavy kickback for N-Deal. No wonder whether it is good or bad when kickback's are there means even Bin Laden is loved by Congress.
Unbecoming act of Dr.Manmohan Singh by Dharam Pal on 2008-09-26 19:04:06.081438+05:30
Sir, The remarks made by Dr.Manmohan Singh show how indebted he is to the person of George Bush and whatever he is doing to clinch the Nuclear deal is to please him. With the people of both the countries sharply divided on the issue the two people are thrusting the deal on them. As far India is concerned the deal means small benefits at enormous cost with doubtful prospect of succeeding. It may help some american companies and Bush may have a high stake somewhere. All said and done our Prime Minister has taken the country to a position which has hurt our standing in the eyes of the word. His latest act of sycophancy has laid bare his bent of mind and how he has let down the country and sullied its honour. He shall pay for it dearly. May be he does not have the soul of people like Shastri Ji but conscience of each man pricks him at some stage.
Indian love Bush. by DILIP/FRANCE on 2008-09-26 19:02:18.369729+05:30
The P.M.should have qualified his statement,he should have stated all Indians apart from the Indian Muslims, deeply and madly love him.India is the land of KamaSutra,as such is renown for love and passion. It is misleading to state that the Nuclear Deal is divisve, this is a non issue. It is in sovereign national interest of India.Ther must not be any doubts.India and USA will become a formidable startegic partners. All good and nationalistic Indians owe a debt to BUSH.

Does Congress support US President Bush Killing of million innocent muslims in Iraq and estabilising Iraq and Afghanisthan by telling Indians love Bush ? Manmohan Singh who failed in controlling inflation at 12%, falling stock index from 22000 to 13000,losing elections donot have support of Indians. He cannot make statements like this when there were demonstration by Muslims against Bush for his policies.Even SP and CPM who are Congress supporters protested against US for Iraq and Afghan wars launched by Bush

Clinton not Bush by Borun Chowdhury on 2008-09-26 18:33:34.998476+05:30
Manmohan is complete nuts. No one loves Bush. Not even people in the US. Clinton was definitely loved by Indians. Obama would also probably be liked by the world.

Do we love Bush? by Abdul Khadar on 2008-09-26 18:12:44.762043+05:30
Such a remark could have been avoided at a time when the country is virtually divided over the N deal.
