Doctors accuse police of bias

The assaulted doctor has been booked for attempt to murder on the MLA's complaint, they alleged.

At a meeting held at the district hospital, they demanded that the police withdraw the attempt to murder charges against Prasad and also take action against MLA and his associates. They continued their strike for the second consecutive day.

Dr R B Ram, president of Siddharth Nagar district unit of Provincial Medical Services Association, said, "Attempt to murder is a non-bailable offence. The charge has been made against Dr Prasad to put a pressure on him. The district police have not questioned the MLA even once."

He added they would meet District Magistrate Hrishikesh Bhaskar Yashod and request him to order an impartial inquiry into the incident.

In Lucknow, vice-president of UP PMS Association, Dr Ashutosh Dubey, said they have informed Health Minister Ahmed Hasan and principal secretary Sanjay Agarwal about the incident. We hope they would look into the matter."

Prasad is working at Siddharth Nagar district hospital as a physician. He has been allotted a flat on the campus, but also stays at a room he has taken rent outside. On Saturday afternoon, MLA Vijay Kumar, along with his associates, went to Prasad's rented room at Naugarh Baansi Marg and reportedly thrashed him. He accused Prasad of indulging in private practice.

Later, when the doctor lodged a complaint with the police, the MLA also lodged a complaint against the doctor.

The MLA claimed that Prasad attacked him when he started taking his photographs of the doctor checking private patients. Besides attempt to murder, Prasad has been booked for criminal intimidation and intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace. Sub-inspector Ram Singh, acting in-charge of Sadar police station, said the MLA alleged that the doctor fired at him with a country-made pistol.

Durga Prasad Tiwari, Circle Officer of Siddharth Nagar, said they have begun investigation. A police team visited the spot and recorded statements of locals and Prasad. "No weapon was found in Prasad's room", said Tiwari.

In his complaint, Prasad said the MLA and his associates forced their way into his room and attacked him. They have been booked on the charges of house trespass, criminal intimidation, voluntarily causing hurt, rioting and prevention of SC/ST atrocities Act.
