When Eddie Murphy portrayed the character of Dr Dolittle in the hit Hollywood movie series,little did he know that there actually exists a real man who can talk to animals,mainly dogs. Meet Cesar Millan,the Mexican-American dog trainer,who has shot to fame with his television series,The Dog Whisperer,on National Geographic Channel. The 42-year-old,referred to as a “dog psychologist”,is the one that people take their depressed,disturbed or ill-tempered dogs to,and Millan begins his “therapy” on the canine as well as the owner. In an e-mail interview,he talks about his best friends.

In your TV series,The Dog Whisperer,you have displayed an uncanny ability to communicate with dogs. You seem to address their inner feelings and they begin to trust you. Do you also have a similar effect on humans?

I rehabilitate dogs. I don’t do dog training,but I make a human being aware of how much he influences the behaviour of a dog. If the human is not aware,he can’t really provide stability in the dog. He can’t really ask the dog to be obedient or not to hurt another dog because animals don’t feel safe in the presence of instability.

Has your “Dr. Dolittle” ability helped you to connect with other animals as well?

Yes. I can see nervousness in a chicken,cat or horse. My goal is just to let them know that they can trust me. I’m never going to train a horse,a chicken or a cat,but if one of my dogs has a problem with any of these animals,I can enlist the help of these animals to cure the dog.

It is often said that dogs help humans suffering from personal or emotional trauma. Is that true?

Through history,the dog has always been there for humans,providing psychological,physical,emotional and even spiritual support. Moreover,a dog is not just a companion. There are associations that are using the ability of dogs to detect cancer at stage one,something that machine can’t do.

Are you planning to bring the show to India?

Before I die,I aim to go to all the countries. I have never visited India,but intend to do so soon.
