Domestic air traffic lifts 3.32 pc in Jan-Oct ’09

  • Domestic air traffic has finally shown some signs of revival with an increase of 4.64 lakh passengers in the festive month of October, according to official figures released on Thursday.

    A total of 39.69 lakh passengers travelled by scheduled domestic airlines in October as aginst 35.05 lakh passengers in September. The silver lining for the aviation industry seems to be positive traffic growth of 3.32 per cent traffic from January to October 2009 as compared with the same period a year ago. The total number of domestic passengers rose to 360.09 lakh in the ten-month period from 348.51 lakh in the corresponding period of 2008.

    Jet Airways and its subsidiary Jetlite led the pack by carrying around 11 lakh passengers, followed by Kingfisher with 8.23 lakh. National carrier Air India (domestic) flew 7.40 lakh passengers, Indigo came next with 5.40 lakh, Spice jet with 4.91 lakh and Go Air with 2.15 lakh passengers in the same period.

    Jet had a percentage share of 27.7, followed by 20.7 per cent of Kingfisher and 18.6 per cent of Air India (domestic). Among the no-frill airlines, IndiGo had a percentage share of 14.3, SpiceJet 13.2, GoAir 5.8 and Paramount 2.0.

    Paramount Airways led the chart among domestic airlines in terms of on-time performance by operating 88.7 per cent of its flights on time. Kingfisher and Indigo followed with figures of 82.8 and 82.4 per cent respectively.
