Don’t play politics on issue: Left to Cong, BJP

The Left parties on Saturday reacted cautiously to the execution of Parliament attack convict Mohd Afzal Guru, saying the law has taken its course. They, however, accused the Congress and the BJP of indulging in competitive politics over the issue.

"It is good that the law of the land has been implemented," senior CPM leader Sitaram Yechury said."Be it in Rajiv Gandhi's assassination or Beant Singh's assassination, there are other cases also. Decisions have not been taken in these cases. Decisions must be taken in those cases so that people continue to have faith in the delivery of justice system." he said.

Veteran CPI leader A B Bardhan said the execution was bound to happen since the President rejected his mercy plea. "He has got what he deserved," he said. Bardhan agreed that there are many people in the death row and "such cases should be decided soon and due compassion should be shown".

While agreeing that the law of the land has taken its course, CPI's D Raja felt the Congress and BJP were trying to politicise the issue. "It seems there is a competition between both the parties, a kind of one-upmanship to show that one is more committed than the other in fighting terror and safeguarding national security." he said. Without making any allegation, Raja also said questions are being raised about the timing of the execution.
