Captain Brendon McCullum and coach John Buchanan may have come in for flak following Kolkata Knight Riderss last-place finish at the recently-concluded Indian Premier League season two in South Africa, but pacer Ishant Sharma insisted that the debacle was a collective responsibility.
No matter who was our captain and coach but the fact was that we failed to deliver as a team during the tournament. A captain is as good as his team, Ishant said on the sidelines of a function on Wednesday.
On who is a better leader,Sourav Ganguly or McCullum, the 20-year-old refused to take sides. They are different types of captain and have different ways of handling the pressure, he said.
While Ishant himself had a decent outing, picking up 11 wickets at an average of 27,the teams 10-match losing streak had a demoralising effect on the bowler. Since the day I started playing cricket,I have never seen my side losing so many matches at a stretch like what happened in the IPL in South Africa. It was certainly the toughest phase of my cricket career so far. But it was also a learning experience for the whole team as well, he said.
Putting the nightmare behind, the Delhi bowler is ready to start afresh in the World Twenty20 in England, where he is likely to spearhead Indias attack. Asked if IPL has caused any kind of fatigue among the players,Ishant replied in the negative. I dont think that there will be fatigue factor during the World Cup. We are professional cricketers and prepared to play that much cricket. We keep doing trainings and also look after ourselves.
T20 is all about momentum. If we continue with the right momentum, like the team did last time,India will defend the title. The couple of practice matches before the main event are going to be crucial from that point of view as they will give us the idea about the conditions in England, he added.
