Don’t pay extra for seat choice to fly

A few airlines were charging an amount of Rs 50 to Rs 4,000 for seat.

In good news for air travellers flying low cost airlines,there will be no extra charge for the choice of their seats any more.

This was stated by Civil Aviation Minister Vayalar Ravi in reply to a written question in Lok Sabha today.

He said it was observed that few scheduled airlines were charging an amount of Rs 50 to Rs 4,000 for seat assignment,which was over and above the fare charge by the airlines.

“With a view to maintain transparency in tariff publication,Directorate General of Civil Aviation has written to scheduled domestic airlines on July 15,2011 to withdraw such charges,” Ravi said in his reply.

Accordingly,airlines — Air India Express,SpiceJet,Go Air and IndiGo have withdarwn seat assignment,he informed.

Some low cost airlines were charging an amount from the passengers who used to book their seats using web booking.

Mangalore Crash: In reply to another question on Mangalore crash,the Minister said that a committee was constituted which made 45 recommendations. Out of this,14 have been implemented while the remaining were being studied.

One member of Civil Aviation safety Advisory Council has written a letter demanding re-opening of the inquiry under Rule 75A of Aircraft Rules (where it appears to the Central Government that any new and material evidence has become available after completion of the investigation… it may,by order,direct the reopening of the same.)

“The matter is under consideration,” he said.
