A visibly miffed Minister for Public Health Suresh Shetty urged legislators not to recommend transfers of doctors as there was already a problem of availability of doctors in rural areas.
Shetty urged legislators, especially from Ratnagiri,Sindhudurg and Nandurbar districts,to refrain from recommending transfers and postings of doctors in other districts.
Shetty said he could not understand the reason behind the reluctance to work in these three districts.
He said he had received around 500 applications for transfer of officials in these three districts.
These postings are crucial as there are vacancies and staff needed in these locations. I request legislators not to send recommendation letters for transfers, he said.
Shetty was replying in the legislative council discussion regarding the public health system touching on issues such as medicine availability, staff and the declining sex ratio.
He said the officers who had been recruited during the recent drive would lose their jobs if they dont join their posts by May-end.
