Equating a dowry-related bride-burning case with terrorism,District Judge Sunita Gupta on Thursday jailed the husband for ten years.
Nafis Khan,in his early twenties,burned to death his 18-year-old wife in October 2009 since she had not paid him the promised dowry of Rs. 20,000.
In-laws are turning out to be outlaws,perpetrating terrorism which destroys the matrimonial home. The terrorist is dowry and it is spreading tentacles in every possible direction, said Judge Gupta. Nafis resides in Welcome,in North East Delhi.
In her dying declaration,the victim had told police that Nafis used to beat her for money and since her parents were unable to fulfill his demands,he burnt her after pouring kerosene oil over her.
The doctor had told the court that when she was brought to the hospital on October 04,2009,she had suffered 99 percent burns to which she succumbed two days later.
The victims mother also told the court that three months after the marriage,Nafis had started harassing and beating her daughter to the extent that she had stopped eating food and also suffered from tuberculosis.
Rejecting his plea for leniency,the court also imposed a fine of Rs. 70,000.
