Samwartak Singh Khangwal, Director, Public Instructions (Schools) of the Union Territory, may land in trouble, as sources said he had exchanged over 75 phone calls with Jolly, the prime accused in the teachers’ recruitment scam.
According to sources in the investigating agency, Samwartak and Jolly (already arrested) had exchanged the calls over three months after the procedure of recruiting teachers in the Education department picked up pace.
“The calls are both outgoing and incoming (on Samwartak’s mobile phone). Though it is not conclusive evidence against Samwartak, it points a needle of strong suspicion to him,” said a senior official, adding that the two were in constant touch over phone for long durations.
Sources added that Jolly and another accused Hardev Singh revealed in their interrogation that they had connived with staff members of the DPI office and got access to the list of around 2,000 names of the candidates who were to be called for interview.
“They had information pertaining to the candidate’s name, address, academic records, marks scored by them in the required examinations, their total scores prepared by the UT Education Department and telephone numbers,” said a senior official associated with the investigation of the case.
A senior UT official said the accused have named two officials posted in the DPI office. “However, their involvement is yet to be ascertained and corroborated with substantial evidence,” the official added.
Samwartak, on his part, maintained innocence, saying, “I am a public man and my number is with many people. I am being framed.”
