The party’s billboards may showcase him as the “future” but echoing what his mother and Congress president Sonia Gandhi said six months ago,Rahul Gandhi said in Surat that Manmohan Singh will remain the UPA’s Prime Ministerial candidate in 2009.

“I have answered this question many times in the past. My prime ministerial candidate for the coming Lok Sabha elections is Dr Manmohan Singh,” Rahul said, when asked if he could see himself as the UPA’s next PM.

Sonia had said last August that Singh would “certainly” remain UPA’s man for the PM’s job. Asked if he would unfurl the national flag at Red Fort next year,Singh had then said,“Hopefully,” leaving Sonia, standing next to him at a press briefing,to intervene: “Certainly,I am saying, certainly.”

And just days ago, after the PM’s surgery,Sonia,in the latest issue of party mouthpiece Congress Sandesh, said: “(Dr Singh) has many more years of service both to our party and to our country. We look forward to his continued leadership.”

Rahul refused to react to Narendra Modi’s remark that the nation should be freed from Nehru-Gandhi family rule. “Mr Modi has many views and he is entitled to have his views,” he said.

Rahul completed his three-day Gujarat visit in Surat today.
