The high rate of eye-related problem in children is due to the fact that they fail to communicate their problems
Eye diseases in children are unique and different from that of adults in many aspects. They are much more difficult to identify and challenging to treat. Many a time’s neither the child nor the parents are aware that the child is suffering from any eye disease. This is because children fail to communicate the problem to their parents. This leads to failure of identification and subsequent treatment of clinical conditions. This finally results in subnormal vision in the child for their entire life. Hence timely identification and treatment of eye problems in children is very necessary”,said Dr. Kaushik Shah, consultant pediatric ophthalmologist and squint surgeon at Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital.
Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital, the multi-speciality hospital base in Chinchwad,Pune, announced the commencement of specialised Department of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Squint. Common eye problems in children
Refractive error or the need for glasses is the most important cause of vision impairment in children. This may lead to permanent deficiency in vision if not detected and treated in time.
Squint, also known as cross eyes,is the condition where the eyes do not work together. It has to be corrected in time to avoid defective vision. Squint at any age group (children as well as adults) can be managed with glasses, eye exercises or eye muscle surgery.
Lazy eye or Amblyopia is the term for poor vision in one or both eyes. It can result from refractive error, squint or other causes. This needs to be identified and treated at an early age to recover full vision.
Retinopathies of Pre-maturity (ROP) Infants born prematurely with or without low birth weight are at risk for developing Retinopathy of Pre-maturity (ROP) which may lead to permanent blindness. This can be avoided by screening babies at proper time after birth and treating them accordingly.
Cataract (opacification of the lens) can also occur in children. This might present at birth or develop later in life. A trauma in childhood can also cause Cataract. Earliest surgery with lens implantation can give full vision to Child.
Allergic Conjunctivitis – Child can have watering irritation, redness, frequent rubbing of eyes. They can be treated effectively with eye drops.
