  • His little sister, Priyanka, is proud that she looks like Dadi and has recently taken to wearing her saris to establish continuity. She would do better to sit with her brother and try and analyse why India remained such a horribly poor country despite nearly forty years of being ruled by their immediate family.

As for you who complain daily about the collapse of democratic institutions and the need for judicial and administrative reform please remember that if there is a single individual who can be blamed that individual would be Indira Gandhi. The two decades in which her ‘towering personality’ loomed over the Indian political landscape were a time of wasted opportunities, corruption and cynicism. A time when Mrs Gandhi’s stenographers were more powerful than Cabinet ministers. She was a bad Leader. It was a bad time.

Well said.By: Jasnaam Singh | 12-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward I completely believe you, Tavleen. Indira was not good for India. She did not treat the kings and minor races of India nicely after they did give away their ancestral lands. I agree with everything you said.
SumeghaBy: sumegha Gulati | 17-Jun-2009 Reply | Forward A well written article. However, there are 2 points where I feel u need reconsideraion.First,"bangladesh is turning into a centre for JIHAD".Jihad is a beautiful, sensible phenomenon of Islam. The sendse in which the word has been used here is negative.Jihad isnt a wroing pgenomena;but it has been misinterpreted by some muslim fanatics.Secondly, there is nothing called "ISALAMIST TERRORISTS".The word Islam means peace.hoe can terrorists be peaceful?can we,logically speaking, have a term called "peaceful terrorits".It would be misnomer.Anyways, these things apart, ur article about the "so-called achievenments" of gandhis is great.
Indira was bad for India.By: HM | 15-Jun-2009 Reply | Forward Indira was a bad leader and a worse person for having broken the promies made to the Royals of India at Independance. Indian Royals gave away their ancestral lands to be part of the undivided India. They were promised two things - 1) Congress will take care of ALL of India 2) The privy purses and titles of the kings will be maintained. Indira broke both promises.Kings gave up everything for a united India and in return they got bad publicity through gov education system and gov controled "media". Constitutional promises were broken and sadly, no one ever mentions this break in faith.Indira's emergency was a terrible time for India. Sadly, too many Indians choose to forget their history. Sadly, this means they will be forced to relive it again and again till they learn its lessons. What happened after her death was terrible news for the Sikhs of Dehli. Sadly, they too have chosen to forget the genocide congress indulged in.Indira was, is and will be bad news for India.
Mr.By: Chimanlal Pujara | 08-May-2009 Reply | Forward How refreshing to come across a journalist prepared to express views so widely shared but rarely articulated. The anchors of NDTV and IBN, among others, should be required to read more and speak (or shout)less.
true...true..true..By: siddharth | 07-May-2009 Reply | Forward well said...in a time when the english media is hailing Rahul Gandhi as the greatest champion of india's poor since mother teresas. its refreshing to read Tavleen's article..thanks
