With frequent complaints of incorrect names and addresses in the electoral list, the district election department has initiated a correction drive from October 1. The drive has been initiated ahead of elections in both the civic bodies.
The corrections in the electoral list will be updated in the Electoral Roll Management System (ERMS). Currently,as many as 65,47,970 voters are registered in the district. The ERMS will help update the list according to the latest census data released by the state government.
We will initiate the drive for the Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC) from October 1. All those who will complete 18 years of age will be included in the list. The drive will also see the election office incorporating the voter photo as well as names in the ERMS,said Apurva Wankhede, deputy election officer of the district.
The system will help the department store important data and also have a uniform system as is the case in the state. The system uploaded with photographs of voters will help avoid bogus voting. It was under the directive of the Election Commission of India to the states to have a comprehensive ERMS to facilitate efficient handling of the electoral roll by including photographs.
The office is also carrying out a drive to check duplication of voters in all the 21 assembly constituencies in the Pune region.
The final list is expected to be completed by January 5.
