The driver of the car who died along with two other occupants of the vehicle after it crashed into a trailer on Palm Beach Road in Navi Mumbai in the early hours of Monday were inebriated at the time, blood analysis results reveal. They had come to Vashi to spend the weekend and were on their way back to Pune when the accident occurred, police said.

"The blood analysis report of the deceased, and the two injured in the accident arrived on Tuesday. It confirmed that the deceased Dinesh Thombre (27), Rahul Thombre (24) and Rahul Jambulkar (25) had consumed alcohol," said senior inspector Shekhar Tore. Dinesh was driving the car, police said.

The three, along with friends Kedarnath Khushwaha (19) and Ganesh Jambulkar (29) were travelling from Vashi and were heading for Pune when the accident took place around 2.30 am on Monday. Tore added that the analysis of blood samples of Khushwaha, who is admitted to Sion hospital, also revealed he had consumed alcohol.

Their Ford Figo reportedly veered out control and collided with a trailer at the crossroads. The impact was so severe that the car smashed right through the undercarriage of the trailer, tearing off the roof of the car. Police said extracting the victims from the mangled remains took time, with a large part of the car having come under the trailer. Ganesh Jambhulkar was discharged from MGM Hospital in Vashi on Tuesday.

"We had registered a complaint against Dinesh. We will now add a section of driving under the influence of alcohol," Tore said.

To usher in the new year without any mishaps, the traffic police have begun a week-long campaign across the city to book revellers who break traffic rules.
