Months after converting the Jangli Maharaj Road and Fergusson College Road to one-way circular routes, the city traffic police and the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) have reasons to cheer.
PMC’s garden department has revealed that the noise pollution on JM and FC Roads has reduced by five to 10 per decibels after the implementation of one-way traffic.
Environment conservation officers from the garden department had recorded the noise levels in residential and commercial areas on JM Road and FC Road region on March 7, before the implementation of one-way. The officer recorded the noise levels in the same area again on October 12.
On October 22, the garden department prepared a report, a copy of which was also sent to the traffic control branch of Pune police.
“The report mentions that noise level in the residential area in JM Road-FC Road region before the implementation of one-way traffic was 87.8 decibels. After the one-way traffic was implemented, the level has come down to 82 decibels. In the commercial area, the noise levels have reduced from 79.86 decibels to 72.8 decibels,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (traffic) Manoj Patil.
The report says that noise level at Gokhale chowk has reduced from 88.06 decibels to 79.6 decibels. At Balgandharva chowk, levels have come down from 72.08 decibels to 70.50 decibels.
It may be recalled that traffic police had started the one-way traffic here on August 21 on an experimental basis.
However, the move received stiff opposition from local citizens and traders. The police, however, continued the one-way traffic and took up some measures to control the speed of vehicles on one-way traffic route.
