Hamari Kaksha, a dropout prevention programme where volunteers work with children suffering from behavioural problems, held its annual function at Government Model School, Sector 7, on Thursday. Several students were honoured on the occasion for excelling in academics and other activities.
Dr S S Dahiya, Director, State Institute of Education, Sector 32, honoured the student volunteers of the institute, who had chosen to take time out from their busy academic schedule to teach children in the evening.
Khushinder Sharma, District Education Officer, UT Education Department, also gave away prizes to the school dropouts, who are now ready to join the mainstream and are making it big despite all odds.
Anuradha Sharma, President of Hamari Kaksha, in her welcome address, said, “In our country, each and every child is given an equal opportunity in education, but now, the need of the hour is to retain the first generation learners in schools.”
Students also presented a colourful cultural show to mark the annual function highlighting the problems of child labour and drug addiction, which they face in their daily life. Secretary of the organisation, Sarita Tewari, said, “Support and encouragement will propel all volunteers to work with renewed zeal for the downtrodden.”
