An inebriated Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) created a flutter in the security establishment when he drove straight into Bangladeshi territory from Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya on Wednesday evening. An embarrassed Meghalaya Police has rushed IGP B L Buam to initiate an enquiry into the incident.

The DSP, whose identity is not being revealed, drove in full police uniform through the Dawki-Tamabil checkpost to Bangladesh, even though police and BSF personnel posted there attempted to stop him. However, the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) put an end to his joyride and detained him. Fortunately for the officer, an Indian coal trader, who was at the BDR post, intervened and helped prevent the issue from escalating. BSF DIG (operations) R Colney said: “The officer was in a drunken state and we handed him over to the police after the BDR turned him over to us.” “It is not only embarrassing for the Indian security forces but it is also a serious offence to travel without proper documents,” said a BSF officer. The wayward cop is likely to face disciplinary action.

According to a senior officer, getting drunk in uniform is bad enough, but “driving into a neighbouring country in that state is unforgivable”. He said the department has taken a serious note of the DSP’s “foolish and unlawful act” and action will be initiated soon.
