Although October 2 is a Dry Day,but the rules were flouted openly as almost all the shops in the city as well as on the outskirts opened after 6 pm.
Newsline team found shops opened on all the main roads like Ferozepur Road,Bus Stand road, near Railway station, the famous Sarabha Nagar market, shops near Flamez Mall and many other locations. Interestingly the excise team found not more than 11 shops opened in the entire district and till the time of filing this report,11 contractors were issued challan in the entire district including one in Jagraon and adjoining areas. They were told to pay Rs 50,000 fine for flouting the norms.
It needs to be mentioned that more than 1,000 liquor shops are located in the district. Last year also only 14 challans were issued, revealed information.
Deputy excise and taxation commissioner (DETC) Parampal Singh however said that the teams were on the job to challan the maximum violaters and if some more people were found to have opened their shops, they too would be challaned.
The district administration, interestingly, issued fresh instructions on Friday evening that on account of Balmiki Jayanti,on October 3 and 4 as well liquor shops will remain closed. Apart from this, even meat shops will also remain closed in the coming two days.
The DC however was not aware that the liquor contractors were throwing all norms to winds even today by opening the shops. A huge rush of customers was also seen at the liquor shops of Sarabha Nagar and at the drinking places in the evening.
