  • The Delhi Transport Corporation on Wednesday admitted to a delay in acquiring new low-floor buses to decongest public transport in the Capital ahead of the Commonwealth Games. As per government inputs, there should have been over 2,000 new buses on the roads by March 2009. There are, however, only 192 new buses till now. The reason for the delay, according to the public transport corporation, is a detailed checking conducted on the delivered vehicle parts before they are certified roadworthy.

“The inspection involves separate checking of 56 components of a bus delivered to us before it is given the green signal,” DTC counsel told a Bench led by Chief Justice A P Shah. The court directed the DTC to file a detailed report on the acquisition of buses and steps taken to fit them with Global Positioning Systems.
