DU admissions: Round 2 begins on Wednesday

With a number of seats still up for grabs in several colleges of the DU,a second round of admissions will begin on Wednesday.

With a number of seats still up for grabs in several colleges of the Delhi University,a second round of admissions will begin tomorrow for students who missed the bus after the high first cut-off percentages.

At the end of the first four days of admission,B Com (honours) and Economics (honours) emerged among the most popular courses at the University with some colleges already full beyond capacity.

However,in colleges like Kirorimal and Sri Ventakateshwar that had fixed very high first cut-offs in these courses, seats are still available.

At KMC which had put the first cut-off at 97 in B Com (honours),not a single seat has been filled in the course which has a sanctioned strength of 43,while in Eco (honours) which was put at a cut-off of 93 per cent to 98 per cent only nine out of 31 seats were filled.

“The second cut-off has been brought to 95.5 per cent in Commerce and 90.75 per cent in Economics, and we now expect our seats be full at the end of the next four days. A third cut-off does not seem a possibility for now,but let’s see how things turn out,” said KMC Principal Bhim Sen.

“When more than 1000 students who have already taken admissions in DU move to engineering colleges like DTU,NICT,seats would be vacated in colleges,” said an official.

By far, colleges away from the North campus were still holding out hope to many DU aspirants who hope to make it to the University. The dip in the cut-offs was marginal for some colleges, and substantial in some.

There was a scramble for the limited seats at the much sought-after colleges in the University after the first cut-off list came out on June 15.

The Sri Ram College of Commerce, which had declared a cut-off of 96 to 100 per cent for B Com (H),was also criticised by some quarters for keeping the rates so high.

However,as students thronged to take admissions, the high cut-offs proved no deterrent.

The college took in 413 students against its 252 seats in the B Com (Honours) course, besides taking 71 against 61 seats in the Eco(H) course. The college, however, still has a substantial number of seats vacant for OBC students.

“A number of Humanities courses like Sociology,Political Science and History are also quite near the full mark,” said Hindu college media coordinator Anju Srivastava.
