On Day 1 of registrations for first-year under-graduate seats at Delhi University, nearly 48,000 students applied for admissions online and offline for a total of 54,000 first-year under-graduate seats on offer.
This is the first time DU is offering online registrations, but a majority of the students — 30,000 — opted to register in the old fashioned way of collecting forms from centres. More than 14,000 of these bought forms from post offices, said the Office of the Dean of Students' Welfare.
Around 18,000 applicants registered online, with nearly 7,500 making payments and submitting their forms online the same day.
The North Campus centres — Faculty of Arts and Miranda House — saw the highest number of applicants, leading to long queues at the Vishwavidyalaya Metro station and a choked Chhatra Marg, the university lifeline.
At the Faculty of Arts, 4,100 forms were sold — the highest for a single centre. At Miranda House, 3,000 forms were sold.
With students choosing the traditional way of applying, forms at most colleges were sold out within hours of the opening of sales. Forms were also sold out at a few post offices.
Students who chose to queue up in the summer heat, rather than opt for online registration, said they were more comfortable with the OMR forms. "I know online forms are there, but I chose offline forms just to be on the safe side," said Neha Tyagi, who came to the Art Faculty building from Ghaziabad.
"I have never been to North Campus, so I just wanted to experience the place. So, I chose to buy the form here. It went smoothly, I was able to buy the form in 10-15 minutes," said Latika Areja, another student.
On Monday, the online forms proved cumbersome with only demand drafts as the mode of payment for candidates. University officials said other payment options, including online payment gateways, will be made available by Friday.
