External Affairs Minister S M Krishna has said some "dubious" educational institutions in Australia were ruining the lives of young Indians and asked Canberra to come out with new regulations to cover private colleges to undo the damage. He also said "physical attacks" on Indian students in Australia and the poor quality of courses and services offered in many vocational colleges were of concern to India.

"I think they (vocational colleges) are not only bringing a bad name to Australia but they are destroying the future of the younger generation of Indian students," Krishna, who is here on a visit, told 'The Australian' newspaper.

He also called for new regulations to cover private colleges and continued reform by the federal and state governments. However, Krishna also praised Canberra and state governments for responding to India's concerns. He said the damage to Australia's reputation in India need not be long term.

"The Australian and (state) governments have quickly moved in and started undoing the damage by a series of measures taken to dispel any notions of insecurity felt by the Indian student community," he said.

"I would want the tempo to be maintained so that signals are constantly flowing to India, so that governments are constantly responding to meet our concerns," Krishna, who met Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and his counterpart Stephen Smith during his visit, said.

"Some dubious educational institutions have lured gullible Indian students into joining some of these institutions. There is a big gap between the quality of what has been promised and what has been delivered," Krishna said. "Some colleges have closed down but full-time fees have been collected from these students and they are left high and dry. So they are wandering around the streets of Sydney and Melbourne and they are a cause of consternation for India," he said.

This is a VERY important message for Indian students going to OZBy: Harden up | 11-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR THE STUDENTS GOING TO OZ TO SPEND THEIR PARENTS HARD EARNED (OR HIDDEN) MONEY. READ CAREFULLYAS SOON AS YOU LAND IN OZ, GO TO ANY HARDWARE SHOP. ASK FOR A 1KG BAG OF CEMENT, JUST CEMENT.TAKE CEMENT WITH YOU, GO TO ANY GROCERY OR ASIAN SHOPASK FOR A $2 MUG AND A STEEL SPOON, POSSIBLY $1, VERY CHEAP FOR YOUTAKE THIS HOME OR YOUR FRIEND THAT YOU ARE GOING TO STAY WITH. OPEN THE CEMENT BAG CAREFULLY AND POUR 3 QUARTER MUG CEMENT INSIDE THE $2 MUG THAT YOU BOUGHT. POUR QUARTER MUG OF WATER IN IT AND STIR IT UP WITH THE $1 SPOON AND NOW SEE WHAT HAPPENS....... THE CEMENT HARDENS UP....... BECOMES REALLY HARD, HARD TO BREAK..... NOW PUT YOURSELF IN PLACE OF CEMENT AND DO WHAT THE CEMENT DID...............HARDEN THE PHAK UP AND GET IN TO THE REAL BUSINESS OF LEARNING, DOESNT MATTER WHERE YOU CAME FROM AND WHAT YOUR BELIEFS ARE, JUST SYNCRONISE WITH THE LOCAL LIFESTYLE AND GET GOING....... YOU WILL BE ALRIGHT!
Fraud in foreign landBy: Kishore Karnad | 11-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward Unfortunately or coincidentlt many fraud institutes are owned, run, and patronized by Indians- not that others are saints. Most of these stuents enrol in these colleges not for education but in the hope of getting P.R. and consequent (relatively) hasselfree life in countries like Australia or U.S.A. etc. Fraud or not, students enrol of their own will- no one puts a gun to their heads. Inspite of all that is said, colleges abroad are run professionally- not based on caste etc. One lesson we can learn is there is room for more professional colleges- people are willing to pay the price for really quality education. We also need to change perception of our younger generation that India today is a country run by corrupt leaders, nothing can be get done without money or muscle power, jobs are given based on caste and influence, common man gets no fair deal etc. It is this frustration that drives youngsters to foreign countries where these things are absent. Introspect--Krishnaji!
Do your home work !By: Ven | 11-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward Krishnaji, you talk so much criticising the Oz. Well done. But didn't you realize that it is your govt which, in the first place, had supported stupid people like Arjun Singh and Karunanidhi to support Mandal commission depriving bright young Indians of quality education in their own country and making them seek alternatives in foreign countries? You are pathetic. On the one side, we can send satellites into space. On the other side, we are unable to provide quality education to our own youngsters in their own country.
Great Bilking MachineBy: Suresh | 11-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward Students joining these colleges get bilked in more than one way. First the consultanat in India charges a fee for sending them to OZ to a college with guaranteed accpetance. Then the OZ consulate in India charges fee for the student visa. Once in OZ they have to pay the exorbitant fee to the college. Then they get taken by the employers in OZ who can pay them much lower wages to do menial jobs than the local conterparts. Then they have to start paying the immigration lawyer to process their application and organise fake letters and job offers so they can get a PR. Sad part about this is that most of the parties involved in this bilking of the poor student are Indians. There is a whole industry that exists in this great bilking scheme. Where do we stop this? Inspite of all this knowledge there is a long queue of kids wanting to come to OZ and New Zealand. Where there is a demand, someone will always find a way to supply.
