The heavy dust storm on Tuesday evening claimed one life in Gurgaon and led to blackouts in several parts of the Capital as cables snapped. According to the police,an unidentified woman was killed in a wall collapse at Devilal Colony in Gurgaon’s Sector 4. The house belonged to one Bhagwan Das Gurjjar and five labourers were sleeping inside when the wall collapsed, killing a woman and injuring four others, the police said.

In Delhi, meanwhile, powercuts were reported from areas like Janakpuri,Mayur Vihar,Saket,Preet Vihar and parts of Lutyen’s Delhi minutes after the heavy dust storm struck. Power supply was restored in some parts by late evening.

Earlier, the scorching day saw Delhi’s power demand increasing to 4020 MW — close to the all-time high demand of 4030 MW recorded last May. Falling short by 200 MW,Delhi Transco reported powercuts from noon to 2 pm in many parts as power channelled from outside Delhi failed to reach the Capital as some lines of the Power Grid Corporation Ltd were not operating.

There was powercut again in the afternoon as the Grid problems persisted, officials said. “This has been the situation for the past week with six lines of PGCL still not operating,” an official said. “This is affecting inter-state power supply. Heavy overdrawing from the Grid led to further loadshedding in the afternoon.”

While the demand was at its peak,Delhi was also overdrawing from the Grid to meet up with load requirement; the brief spell of showers in the evening, though, offered some respite.
