Eagle owl rescued

A fully grown eagle owl has been rescued by volunteers of Care for Animals and Protection of Environment (CAPE)-India and good Samaritans from Madhopuri, Ludhiana.

On Saturday evening, Bhupinder Singh and Tarwinder Singh of the area saw a bird struggling for freedom from a eucalyptus tree. Its wings were entangled in the plastic kite-string. Later, CAPE-India was alerted, whose volunteers and good Samaritans brought the bird down.

The owl has big reddish yellow eyes and a tuft of feathers on both sides of the head. The rare bird is used illegally in witchcraft and fetches a price in lakhs in black market.

Dr Sandeep K Jain, chief co-ordinator of CAPE-India, has urged the state government and chief wildlife warden to ban the use of plastic string for flying kites in the state under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, as it cripples thousands of birds every year in kite flying season.
