The 15.5-km long Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor planned for East Delhi might be partially elevated along the Yamuna banks, Delhi government officials said on Monday.
The Transport department is preparing a note on the project to table in the Cabinet next week.
The work on the Karawal Nagar-Shastri Nagar-Mori Gate corridor will be taken up in two phases — Phase-I will cover Karawal Nagar to Gandhi Nagar and Phase-II will be from Bhajanpura to Mori Gate, connecting Shastri Park.
The Khajuri Khas to Shastri Park section will be common to both the phases.
Following Cabinet approval, officials said, it will take another three to four months to start the construction.
"Tenders will be floated for the corridor after the Cabinet approval. It will take 28 months for the work to be completed,'' a Transport official said.
The corridor is among the 15 BRT stretches planned for the city. The detailed project reports for other corridors are not ready yet.
"The available right of way on the main corridor and link roads is insufficient. We will need to be widen the road along the Yamuna. In fact, portions of it might be elevated — from Shastri Park to Usmanpur — to create additional road space. A new flyover will also be constructed along GT Road. This can be used by private vehicles, taxis and autorickshaws, and the buses can run at-grade level,'' the official said.
This corridor was originally planned between Karawal Nagar and Shastri Park, but later extended to Gandhi Nagar, Bhajanpura/Yamuna Vihar and ISBT.
There are plans to create an exclusive BRT depot for the corridor near the Police Training Centre.
The hybrid system of operation of the corridor will mean that it will not be closed at any point, and traffic flow will be flexible as per requirement.
