East Bengal Club coasted to an emphatic win in the CAB first division league,trouncing Aryan Club by 153 runs in the two-day match,on Monday. After East Bengal posted a commanding 397 for 8 in their allotted 85 overs,Aryan’s Pradipto Malik scored 97 and led the charge for his side,but his knock went in vain as the rest of the Aryan batsmen capitulated at the hands of experienced left-arm spinner Shib Sagar Singh.

The southpaw senior Bengal spinner broke the back of the Aryan batting,finishing with impressive figures of 4 for 75 as Aryan were dismissed for 244 in 82 overs,falling short by a whopping 153 runs.

Meanwhile,it was learnt that Bengal skipper Laxmi Ratan Shukla is mulling over the idea of opening the bowling alongside Ranadeb Bose if the visitors happen to field first against Uttar Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy Group B Super League match that is expected to get underway tomorrow in Kanpur.

Barisha Sporting Club 218 (Imran Ali 58; Soham Ghosh 3/48) in 56.3 overs v BNR Recreation Club 222/8 (Debopam Biswas 52 not out; Imran Ali 4/50) in 62.1 overs. BNR Recreation Club won by 2 wickets.

Customs Club 266 (Sabyasachi Mukherjee 83,Debdulal Mazumdar 40; Arunlal Yadav 4/47,Santosh Roy 3/94) v George Telegraph 138 (Sanjay Yadav 31; Debdulal Mazumdar 4/47,CP Verma 3/17). Customs Club won by 128 runs.

Tollygunge Agragami 270 (Sonket Banerjee 66,Neeraj 52; Akash Mahindra 3/31) in 69.2 overs v M Milan Samity 164 (Santanu Dutta 57 not out; Subhajit Samaddar 6/57,Sujoy Sharma 2/30) in 47 overs. Tollygunge Agragami won by 106 runs.

Homage to renowned sports journalist
The Sutanuti Book Fair committee,which is six years old,on Sunday held a gala programme to pay tribute to legendary sports journalist of yesteryears,Rakhal Bhattacharya,to mark his birth centenary. The event was held at Girish Mancha. The book fair,which started off alongside the tribute ceremony,will be held for a week at Girish Mancha. Bhattacharya,who was born in 1910 and died in 1980,had worked with The Statesman for 19 years. Stalwart journalists in Kolkata’s Maidan like Shyam Sundar Ghosh and Chitya Biswas,and Rakhal Bhattacharya’s daughter Malabika Chattopadhyay graced the occasion and recalled fond memories with the legendary scribe and pointed out that he left an indelible mark on the Maidan.

Southern Railway scored an emphatic 3-1 victory against SAI Training Centre in the 114th All-India Beighton Cup Hockey Tournament 2009,on Monday. Dibakaran struck twice for Southern Railway and Magesh Varan netted one,while Ignatious Toppo scored SAI Training Centre’s lone goal.

AAI sweep titles
Airports Authority of India Sports Control Board’s men and women’s teams won both the team titles in the All India Inter-Institution Badminton organised by the Ordnance Factories Sports Promotion Board at SAI Eastern Centre on Sunday. The AAI men’s team beat Food Corporation of India (FCI) 3-2 in the final while the women’s team had it easy against holder BSNL,which it blanked 2-0 in the other final.
