EC asks to book ‘suspected intimidators’ in North Bengal

The Election Commission directed top civil and police officials to arrest them to ensure free and fair elections.

The Election Commission today directed top civil and police officials of six districts in north Bengal to prepare a list of “suspected intimidators” and arrest them to ensure free and fair elections during the first phase of assembly polls on April 18.

Deputy Chief Election Commissioner Vinod Jutsi said here that he had asked the District Magistrates and the Superintendents of Police to make lists of “suspected intimidators” and “those fearing to be intimidated,” following a meeting with them.

Discussions were held with with District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police of Malda,Dakshin Dinajpur and Coochbehar,Darjeeling,Jalpaiguri districts during the last two days,he said.

Police had also been asked to book the “intimidators” and take all measures to ensure safety to those who were included in the “those fearing to be intimidated” list.

To a question on the voting rights of over a lakh Indians residing in the Indo-Bangla border enclaves in Jalpaiguri and Coochbehar districts,he said,”I’ll talk to the respective District Magistrates and let you know later.”
