EC teams reach flashpoint areas

The six-member team,which is in Bengal to assess the law and order situation in the state’s troubled pockets ahead of the Assembly elections,on Tuesday fanned out in three worst-hit districts.

The six-member team,which is in Bengal to assess the law and order situation in the state’s troubled pockets ahead of the Assembly elections,on Tuesday fanned out in three worst-hit districts. The observers divided themselves into three teams and visited North 24-Parganas,Birbhum district and West Midanpore on way to Purulia. At most places,the teams called the DMs and SPs to get briefing about the law and order situation. An official of the West Midnapore district administration said the EC team wants to know the overall situation in the district.

North 24 Parganas: The EC team comprising Sudhir Kumar Rakesh and Zaki Ahmed visited Sashan in North 24-Parganas,a hot-bed of clashes between the CPM and Trinamool supporters for last two years. Rakesh and Ahmed discussed the situation with DM Vinod Kumar,SP Rahul Srivastav and other officials. The team also listened to villagers who have been staying in camps for months.

Birbhum: Another EC team comprising ADG,Jharkhand Police,D K Pande,and DIG,NCRB,P K Naidu were in Birbhum district and went to Nanoor in the evening. The two observers discussed the situation with DM Sumitra Mohan,SP Humayun Kabir and other officials of the district administration. Later,the observers left for Nanoor in the evening. In the morning,the observers had halted at Burdwan and met DM Omkar Singh Meena for 15 minutes. Meena said the observers would visit Burdwan tomorrow again. Raina,Mangolkot and Ketugram areas in Burdwan have been witnessing fierce political battle over the past few months.

West Mindapore and Purulia: The third EC team which comprised R S Reddy,DIG IB,Andhra Pradesh and B Ranpis,DIG Orissa discussed the law and order situation with West Midnapore DM Sudrinder Gupta and SP Manoj Verma. West Midnapore has been the worst violence-hit area in he state and there are allegations that CPM has set up camps of Harmads ( hired goons) to wrest control of the area.

Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal,Sunil Gupta meanwhile held a high-level meetingwhich was attended by Samar Ghosh,Chief Secretary,G D Gautam,Home Secretary.
