  • Disapproving of the BJP poll advertisement with some reference to Jamia Millia Islamia and the Ram Sethu issue, the Election Commission on Sunday said the party should “avoid recurrence” of such violation of the model code of conduct.

The EC had written to BJP president Rajnath Singh after the Congress had moved the poll panel, alleging a violation of the model code of conduct.

After the BJP’s reply, the EC said the statement in the advertisement that “Jamia University funds to defend terror accused” was not factually correct. “The Vice Chancellor of the Jamia University has categorically stated that no fund of the institute was being used for the alleged purpose and that the students of the University were themselves raising funds,” the EC said.

Referring to the BJP statement on Ram Sethu, the EC said the matter was before the Supreme Court and should not have been made a political issue by the party.

“Having regard to the above, the Commission disapproves the inclusion of the above statements in your advertisement which violate the letter and spirit of the Model Code of Conduct. The Commission expects that your party would avoid recurrence of such things,” the EC said.
