  • Chandan Chakraborty, the editor of CPI’s Bengali mouthpiece Kalantar who had been missing since Sunday, was found dead on the banks of the Hooghly in Shibpur on Tuesday. The 52-year-old’s family had lodged a complaint on failing to contact Chakraborty after he left home on Sunday morning.

“On Sunday evening, we received a phone call from North Port police station saying they had recovered his bag from a vessel that plies between Bagbazar Ghat and Howrah,” said elder brother Samarendra. “The crew of the vessel told the police that Chakraborty had jumped from the vessel,” said Samarendra, adding that the family was however not convinced that he committed suicide. While CPI state secretary Manju Mazumdar described the death as an accident, party sources said he was suffering from depression.
