Education department officials visit Sacred Heart School

Two education department officials visited Sacred Heart School in Worli Tuesday to probe allegations of corporal punishment against two teachers and the principal. They will submit a report to the education inspector of south zone Wednesday.

"We have not received an official complaint but have initiated a probe. Two of our officials were sent to the school Tuesday. They recorded statements of the victim, other students, teachers and the principal," said Balasaheb Mane, education inspector (south zone).

Student Pracheeti Burkar had claimed Saturday teacher Joseph Verghese slapped her after the ring of a mobile phone disrupted a lecture. The school had a week ago banned mobile phones in classes.

Verghese checked bags of all 70 students in the class and accused Pracheeti of hiding her phone.

Father Sunil Burkar claimed Verghese and another teacher slapped Pracheeti hard, making her bleed from the nose and mouth. Burkar and wife Vrinda filed a police complaint Sunday against the school principal and the two teachers.

"We will see if the teachers are at fault. If found guilty of corporal punishment, they will face disciplinary action," said Mane.
