Education dept starts ‘total sanitation’ drive

Targeting around 1 lakh students studying in 54 schools catering to the slums and villages of Chandigarh,the UT Education Department and Yuvsatta have started a ‘total sanitation’ drive in the city.

Targeting around 1 lakh students studying in 54 schools catering to the slums and villages of Chandigarh,the UT Education Department and Yuvsatta have started a ‘total sanitation’ drive in the city. The programme is supported by WAPCOS India lTD Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) R K Gupta.

The focus of the drive is in mobilising school children and through them the community for the adoption of hygienic practices,especially handwashing,waste segregation,good personal hygiene,toilet use and water conservation. Union Parliamentary Affairs and Water Resources Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal,WAPCOS,New Delhi,General Manager S K Ahuja,Education Department Officer Chanchal Singh ,Bhojia Dental College Chairman R K Bhojia,Charitable Cricket Academy Chairman Gagan Swarup Singla,Principal Dharmpal Sharma and Residents’ Welfare Association President Krishan Lal were among the guests on the occasion.

Applauding the initiative,P K Sharma said that to create awareness on sanitation and strengthen the initiative,the Education Department will motivate all its staff and students to promote healthy sanitation practices along with water conservation. As water is a precious resource,a casual approach would certainly bring dooms day much closer,he pointed out.

Launching the campaign,Bansal said that Chandigarh represents the most modern face of India and it is the responsibility of each one of us to make it a real model by generating awareness about all-around cleanliness,ensuring no open defecation,promoting a healthy lifestyle among generation next and water conservation techniques. Out of his MPLADS,he also sanctioned 24 taps each for the 54 schools catering to children from slums and villages.

Yuvsatta Coordinator Promod Sharma said that besides covering these 54 schools,they propose to organise a function on the eve of the anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination to formally honour around 500 students,50 teachers and the five schools of the city that have done the most to spread and sustain the sanitation and water conservation initiative. Artistes of Mask Theatre represented a play Jara Oohi on sanitation on the occasion. Yuvsatta volunteers also distributed soaps to children and the people present on the occasion to promote handwashing.
