City boy wins budding scientist contest

Yash Mandlecha, a student from City Pride School, bagged the first position in the finale of the BrainCafe Budding Scientist Contest 2012. He won an all-expenses paid trip to Japan. The contest is a national-level hunt for scientific talent among students. As many as 49 students from class 1-8 showcased their projects at the grand finale held in Mumbai on Sunday. Subhash Chandra, chairman, Essel Group, Dr Anil Kakodkar, chairman, Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre, and Fukuzumi, CEO, Gakken Educational from Japan, were also present at the event. Mandlecha, a class 8 student, presented a project on Green Generator which he created using materials like 'rui' plant leaves, zinc containers, graphite rods, rubber bands, wires and voltammeter.

Chandra Lecture-2012 on December 11

As part of the Chandra Lecture-2012, Dr Sandra Faber, a renowned Astrophysics Astronomer, will deliver a talk on Modern Genesis and the Limits of Cosmic Knowledge on December 11 at Chandrasekhar Auditorium, Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA). Started in celebration of the birth centenary of Prof. Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, IUCAA hosts the lecture every year. The lecture will distill a century of cosmic discoveries to synthesise the modern story of Genesis. Faber's research focuses on the formation and evolution of galaxies and the evolution of large-scale structure in the universe, using 10-meter Keck telescopes and the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Faber has received numerous awards, including the prestigious Henry Norris Russel Lectureship (2011) & the Bruce Gold Medal (2012).

Muktangan science centre branch inaugurated

Renowned nuclear scientist Anil Kakodkar inaugurated the Jnana Prabodhini branch of the Muktangan Exploratory Science Centre. Jnana Prabodhini and Matrumandir International Organisation had recently organised a national educational conference. Delivering his key note address, Kakodkar said, "Education must empower the youth. It must transcend bookish knowledge towards training youth to prepare them for fresh challenges which lie ahead. Corporate world and the education sector should work together to achieve their common objectives. It is possible for India to develop a technology that will be accepted and acclaimed internationally. If we succeed in doing that then the education system has succeeded in a big way". Ram Takwale, former vice-chancellor, University of Pune, Dr.Shankar Gowarikar from Muktangan and Dr.Girish Bapat, the editor of Prabodhini, were among the other dignitaries present. As many as 500 educationists from 13 states participated in the event.
