The outlook is positive. Education, health and judicial reforms, all appear to be falling in place in 2013. But realty is different

The rates are high, but there is likely to be a steady demand for residential properties in Chembur and Wadala. Reason: Vast improvement in transport-related infrastructure, with monorail, Santacruz-Chembur Link Road and Eastern Freeway set to open for traffic.

Property rates in Chembur are between Rs 12,000 and Rs 15,000 per square feet and in Wadala between Rs 14,000 and Rs 17,000.

Demand is also likely to remain high in Borivali, Kandivali, Virar, Murbad, Shahapur, Ulwe and Navi Mumbai.

However, no major correction is expected in prices given the high land and construction costs.

The commercial real estate sector is expected to experience a slowdown. Rentals could go up due to scarcity of office stock in prime business districts.

Education

To bring parity among boards and to prepare junior college students for a medical and health sciences common entrance test, Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education has upgraded physics, chemistry, mathematics and biology syllabi to match the core prepared by Council of Boards of School Education in India.

The upgrade and modification is in accordance with the directives of National Curriculum Framework, 2010.

Mathematics was earlier divided into algebra and geometry, a 150-mark group. Chairman of state board Sarjerao Jadhav said the marks had been brought down to 100. As such, he said, there was a need to rework the syllabi and omit certain portions. The changes will come into effect from 2013-14.

Health

WITH life becoming stressful and erratic, BMC will focus on lifestyle diseases in 2013. Over 25 clinics for cancer treatment and mental health are expected to come up in the city. The year will also see BMC set up a diabetes registry. "It is a misconception diabetes is a rich man's disease. There should be attention to slums too. The registry will help us keep track of patients and assist them," said additional municipal commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar.
