The Mumbai Police are drawing up plans for an overhaul of the Police Hospital in Nagpada after a recent inspection revealed a sorry state of affairs. Senior officers were appalled to find that a cadet, who was recruited on compassionate grounds after her father died while serving in the force, had been arbitrarily declared of unsound mind and was being given shock therapy despite her protests.

The police are now approaching experts from the Asian Heart Institute and P D Hinduja Hospital in a bid to restructure hospital staff, procure modern medical equipment, renovate and demolish parts of the building.

Sources revealed that on October 18,three top officers visited the hospital along with cardiac specialist Dr Ramakant Panda of Asian Heart Institute in Bandra-Kurla Complex. “It was found that a cadet had been confined in the hospital and was being treated arbitrarily as mentally unsound. She clearly came across as being of sound mind and was speaking with clarity,” said one of the officers who had visited the hospital.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Economic Offences Wing) Rajvardhan has been asked to ensure proper care for the cadet, sources said.

A note prepared after the inspection said the operation theatre and eye care unit have not been used for a single procedure so far. The dental unit, which is almost 20 years old, “has lots of defects and the X-ray machine is outdated”. It revealed that many policemen went to the hospital with ailments but the staff is not competent to deal with them.

“The Additional CP (EOW) is now drafting a comprehensive proposal to the government for modernisation of the hospital. Dr Panda and Dr Gustad Davar from P D Hinduja Hospital have been approached for their expertise,” said the officer.
