Former Prime Minister and JDS supremo Deve Gowda on Monday announced the formation of the Third Front, an amalgamation of eight parties including the Left, and touted as a political alternative to the Congress and BJP.

The much talked about Front would be launched in Karnataka on March 12 with a rally in Tumkur, 50 km from Bangalore, Gowda said. The announcement came shortly before the schedule for the General elections was announced.

Leaders of eight political outfits who have agreed to be part of the Third Front - CPI, CPM, Forward Bloc, RPI, TDP, TRS, AIADMK and JDS - will take part in the rally, Gowda said.

Gowda, who took a lead role in giving shape to the formation of the Front, which his political opponents BJP and Congress pooh poohed as a "mirage", said the agenda of the new outfit would be unveiled at the rally.

There was no discussion in the Front "as of now" on who would be its prime ministerial candidate nor any decision taken in support of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati for the post, he said.

The proposed Third Front would formulate alternative programmes to overcome "several crises" created by UPA and NDA, he said and clarified that "certain sensitive issues like inter-state river water dispute sharing and reservation will not be touched and will be left to respective states".

State unit leaders of Left parties were present when Gowda made the announcement.

Third front...ha!By: Indian | 04-Mar-2009 Reply | Forward I really love the Kamala Hassan movie "India" where he eradicates the scum of India...i really wish that happened in real life and not just reel life!
fooling all the people all the timeBy: Ganesh | 04-Mar-2009 Reply | Forward This man Deve Gowda is well known for his acts of betrayal. The most recent case of dumping Yediyurappa just when the appointed time for transfer of power came, is fresh in ones mind.He was emboldened by the performance of JDS in the local body election.Incidently his party is secular and communal based on seasons. When JDS formed an alliance with BJP in karnataka,he pretended as if it was the work of his son alone and distanced himself from his son just to fool the people of karnataka. He must be taught another lesson by the voters this time for life.
FATE OF THIRD FRONT, WHY CAN'T THEY THINK OF POOR PEOPLE's EDUCATIONBy: B S GANESH | 03-Mar-2009 Reply | Forward it is most unfortunate we have plenty of power-greedy senior politicians who try to fish in troubled waters. These politicians instead of commencing THIRD AND FOURTH FRONTS can open many schools for children of poor people, they will be doing great service to the country and get honour as patriots. India is suffering from corruption in all places especially in government. Instead of hankering for power if they fight corruption and open many schools to educate children next generation would be better. We have already seen the fate of THIRD FRONT and they waste public money create conspiracies for power and end.B S GANESH
Re:By: Adi | 04-Mar-2009 Reply | Forward Well Ganesh, you letter remindes to the question. how many patriots do we really remember. If we recognise the real patriots, then these jokers(Indian politicians) would not have the guts to launch these sort of fronts.
Third front in politics gearing up...By: Mahesh Naik | 03-Mar-2009 Reply | Forward The Not(Male,Female) already fight elections better than the fronts. So what does the Third front propose to do. Are they planning for mass scale castrations of themselves(they desrve it)or their followers(poor voters , misguided and all that)... They will be every Mumbai Dog's envy.
Opportunists !!By: ANIYAN | 03-Mar-2009 Reply | Forward Except for his short stinct as PM, Deva Gowda is a 'zero' in national politics. Congress was wooing him only for votes and to defeat BJP; not out of his statesmanship or political experience. If Mayawati is projected as 'PM', AIADMK will be out. If Jayalalitha is projected asPM', BSP will be out. And Gowda himself is dreaming of another tenure to become the PM. !!. Naidu's effort is to win Andhra assembly polls and not of any national interest. He and TRS can never go together. So, the third front is a combination of opportunists and is expected to break even before the polls.
