“Either diplomacy or war”

  • “Trust but verify,” the Prime Minister says, invoking Ronald Reagan. Of course, Reagan did not just stop at enunciating a maxim. He worked to, and succeeded in helping dismember “the Evil Empire.” One does not have to even ask whether the Prime Minister will do anything of the sort.

But take the maxim itself that the Prime Minister says he believes in following. Has all verification not already shown that Pakistan has not just been organizing terror-strikes against India, it has conducted a proxy-war continuously, unrelentingly for three decades? Evidence apart, haven’t the highest authorities of Pakistan acknowledged as much? Did Musharraf not proclaim, “Jihad is an instrument of State policy”? Has Zardari not said just a fortnight ago that, indeed, Pakistan spawned terrorists? Has our Army not said just a few weeks ago that infiltration into Kashmir has been stepped up again?

The Prime Minister’s reason for going on trusting is belief, it is faith in the current leadership of Pakistan. He told Parliament on 29 July, “I sincerely believe that it is as much in Pakistan’s interest as it is in ours to strive to make peace. Pakistan must defeat terrorism before being consumed by it. I believe the current there understands that. It may not be very strong, but the impression that I have is that the current leadership understands the need for action. [What “may not be very strong”? The current leadership of Pakistan? The understanding that the current leadership of Pakistan has about the need to fight terrorism? Or the impression that the Prime Minister has formed of the understanding that the current leadership of Pakistan has about fighting terrorism?] I was told by their parliamentarians who accompanied Prime Minister Gilani that there is now a political consensus in Pakistan against terrorism. That should strengthen the hands of its leadership in taking the hard decisions that will be needed to destroy terrorism and its sponsors in their country.”

    ... contd.

"Yathaa prajaa Thathaa Raajaa"By: A. Chidambaram | 14-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward In a monarchy, it is,"yathaa raajaa thathaa prajaa", 'as the king, so the people'. In a democracy it is the other way round. We get the leaders we deserve. When the average 'us' is corrupt, lacking in courage, unwilling to confront, unwilling to lose in a fight for dignity and too centred on economic betterment, we will get rulers who reflect these qualities. I remember the words, "systems failure" during the stock market scam of the 1990s. I recall, "zero tolerance" for any "excesses" by our Armed Forces in Kashmir! So, dear bretheren, prepare to get punished. Better still don't prepare and get whipped. Because that's what we deserve. For my leader is my mirror image. Happy independance day (Celebrate while you can).
Pakistan's admissionsBy: M.L.Gupta | 13-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward India can not take any credit for Pakistan admitting openly the role of its own people in 26/11 barbarity in mumbai. Had it not been for the USA, Pakistan would never have admitted anything. We should be thankful to America for that.Having any expectations of peace from Pakistan is like seeing bright stars in bright sun light!Pakistan is a military regime, with need based make-up of a democratic face for short intervals, but to revert back to original shape.Hence, there is no harm in dialogues. But inclusion of Balochistan in the Sherm declaration was too serious a matter which went beyond dialogue. If it was mention from one side only, then it was a monologue and not a dialogue! With Pakistan, the question is: to first trust or first verify. If you trust you have nothing to verify and if verify you can't trust(like:if thou are beautiful thou art not faithful and if thou are faithful thou art not beautiful). Those worthies who define diplomacy as telling 'lies convincingly'pl spare INDIA!
India needs a smart and fit leadership!By: Dr Yadu Singh | 13-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward PM Manmohan Singh is a great economist but I have my doubts about him being a great statesman. Political craft is very different from economic management. Is it the old age or is it the fact that he is really not the potitician of the type which India needs? By the way, why do we have almost all the top end of Indian leadership in their late 70s and 80s? It is a medical fact that we lose our mental alertness as we grow older. PM Manmohan Singh did make a blunder by accepting the inclusion of Balochistan and by not insisting on the reiteration of the previous Pakistani committments in the Egypt Joint statement between him and PM Gilani. We seem to make this type of mistakes as is evidenced by Mr Nehru's decison to take Kashmir issue to UNO in 1948 and by the failure by Mrs Indira Gandhi to resolve Kashmir issue with Mr Bhutto in 1971 when Pakistan was very weak with 70000 of its troops as POW in India. The time has come that we ask for a better performance from our leaders.
What do we do?By: Ashutosh Malik | 13-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward When the editors of almost all newspapers and media channels are busy appreciating what the Prime Minister has done, how will the people understand what is happening? We have been indoctrinated through generations to keep on absorbing hits, and feel guilty about attacking and teaching other's lessons. We will need to change the entire class of leadership of this country if we have to make anything change. We seem to be sadomasochistic - derive pleasure from being hit! I don't know what else explains our behaviour. So prepare to be hit again.
Well known deeds of CongressBy: YD | 13-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward There are four types of voters in India, educated and uneducated. Among educated there are three types, first type do understand, analyse and vote according to national interest (tiny minority), second who do not want to understand and vote for their own selfish ends, third type don't understand and vote according to their dog like loyalty and the rest, the majority, are far too illitrate and ignorant that they still vote for Nehru, Gandhi and cow. Now what the writer has written is well known but in India the perpetrators are called "brillient and the best PM India ever had". Unless voter psyche is changed nothing will change in India.
