An elderly couple has been arrested for allegedly poisoning to death as many as 57 squirrels, the police said.
The accused Ram Mallaiya (60) and his wife Kallaiya were caught by people in the municipal garden of district headquarter Himmatnagar on Wednesday and handed over to the police.
According to the police, the duo had allegedly sprinkled some chemical on trees in the garden.
The squirrels gathered around the trees and died after consuming it.
Mallaiya was caught when he was putting the dead squirrels in his bag.
In his statement to the police, Mallaiya said he was advised by a doctor to eat squirrels to improve health condition.
The couple has been handed over to forest officials for further investigation, police inspector P D Patel said.
The duo has been booked under Wildlife Protection Act and further probe is on, forest officials said.
