Now, electoral officers are tapping religious places and cooperative housing societies in a bid to enlist new voters till July 29. On Sunday, a team of officers will visit St Patrick’s cathedral to enlist Catholics who come for the morning mass.
Daigo Almeida, president of the Catholic Association of Poona, said they had urged the electoral officers to visit the cathedral on Sundays as there is always a huge gathering of people attending mass. A similar drive was conducted on July 19.
According to Uttam Patil, electoral registration officer, Cantonment assembly constituency, “We plan to visit places where people congregate. We have representations from various cooperative societies and our teams will visit them,” he said.
“Though the team was at the cathedral since 9 am, it was only after the 10 am mass that people started making enquiries. We expect huge rush next Sunday as the priests have announced during the mass that the district collectorate team will be setting up a camp from 7 am onwards,” Patil said.
According to Deepa Bhosale, Tehsildar, District resettlement office, more than 50 photographs were taken during the morning hours and several youngsters were given Form 6 to get enlisted as new voters.
Bhosale, who was also part of the team that conducted various camps on Sunday, said they had an online set-up. “We are visiting societies where people have been registered as voters but do not have their photo identity cards. So, we take their pictures.”
