Employees on half-day strike against quota in promotion bill

Several employees of state government observed a half-day work boycott on Monday under the aegis of Sarvajan Hitay Sanrakshan Samiti, a committee of government employees opposed to reservation, protesting against the introduction of the bill to introduce a quota for SC/STs in government jobs.

A group of employees held a sit-in outside Vidhan Sabha from Monday afternoon around 2 pm. The committee has asked its members to be prepared for lightning strikes if the government presses for the passage of the bill.

However, no major work was affected because of the strike. Shailendra Dubey, president of the committee, said they had exempted the employees of departments like transport, power and health so that there was no inconvenience to the public.

Dubey said the Rajya Sabha Chairman has called an all-party meeting on Tuesday to discuss the bill and they will hold protest meetings on Tuesday also, but will not boycott work. He said they will decide their course of action, depending on further developments on the issue.

Meanwhile, Arakshan Bachao Sangharsh Samiti, a committee of government employees supporting reservation, demanded that the central government should ensure the passage of the bill. In a statement the committee said that its members will work overtime if required so that the strike by employees opposed to reservation does not affect work.
