New Delhi, September 19:: Winner of seven gallantry medals, Delhi Police Special Cell officer Mohan Chand Sharma who was critically injured on Friday in an encounter with Indian Mujahideen militants in New Delhi died after battling for life for nearly eight hours.

Sharma (41), who led Friday's daring encounter at Jamia Nagar where five terrorists linked with the recent serial blasts in the country were holed up, had received three bullet injuries on his abdomen, thighs and right arm.

The inspector, who was bleeding profusely, was rushed to the nearby Holy Family hospital where he was operated upon and later put on life support systems.

After battling with his injuries for nearly eight hours, he was declared dead at 7 pm in the evening.

"We have lost our best man," Joint Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Karnal Singh said.

Sharma, who is survived by his wife and two young children, had won seven gallantry medals including a President's medal in 2008.

He joined Delhi Police as a sub-inspector in 1989 and was instrumental in the killing of 35 terrorists and the arrest of another 80 militants, police sources claimed, adding he had killed 40 inter-state gangsters and arrested another 129.

Home Minister Shivraj Patil said the example set by Sharma was ‘very rare’ to be seen.

"I have asked the Police Commissioner (Y S Dadwal) to do whatever is needed to help the family of this brave officer," Patil said after visiting the hospital.

He said the Home Ministry will offer all support to the officer's family.

Delhi encounter: 2 militants wanted in blasts killed

In a brush with Terror in the capital for a second time in a week, two militants of the 'Indian Mujahideen' allegedly involved in the serial blasts in Delhi and other places including Ahmedabad, were killed in a fierce gunbattle that also left an Inspector seriously wounded in Jamia Nagar in South Delhi on Friday.

One of the two killed was identified as Atif, a prominent operative of the Indian Mujahideen who is believed to have played a ‘key role’ in the blasts in Delhi as well as in Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Bangalore, Delhi Police Commissioner Y S Dadwal said on the shootout that lasted about an hour.

Atif's accomplice Sajid, also a member of the Indian Mujahideen which is a shadow outfit of the banned SIMI and Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), was also killed while police nabbed Mohammed Saif who was injured in the gunbattle in 'Batla House', a four-storied building.

Provide Buetproof Jacket To Police by Biswajit on 2008-09-19 19:37:43.302696+05:30
If the Govt. had adequately taken care of Police and provided boolet proof jackets, the brave officer would still be with us. But, our ministers only know how to hide behind boolet proof cars, but do not know how to provide one to the people fighting for his and country's security.
Inquiry by ADGURU on 2008-09-19 19:20:21.955857+05:30
An inquiry must be set against people living in Jamia area and quick action MUST be taken against those involved:Once the firing stopped, large number of people thronged the narrow lanes of the area and shouted religious slogans."We are all against terrorism, then why was our religious places place targeted," asked one of the residents."Last time also, they came into the area a day before Id and conducted a similar operation. There must be a thorough probe and it should be clearly established if those killed were really terrorists," Salim Mohammed, a resident said.Because of such people we are losing good officers!
BETTER FORCE by NARAYAN LAXMAN on 2008-09-19 18:23:28.312631+05:30
Good news atleast few terrorists involved have been brought down/captured by the police. If there was prior info of these terrorists holed up in a building why can't the police take help of army/CRPF and see that nobody escaped. The whole area must be cordoned off. Our police are not trained to the extent to counter a terrorist attacks and that is one main reason the attacks are happening repeatedly. SIT, CBI and Military power must be used to counter the terrorist strategy. Make changes in the way you deal with these demons and be effective.

by Does it matter on 2008-10-19 08:18:52.481495+05:30
No he didn't shoot himself. He was shot by his own colleagues at the behest of an external order. The postmortem report proves he was shot from behind and at very close range.
Need for Everyday Vigilance by Kirtimaan on 2008-09-19 17:50:44.642386+05:30
What stops delhi police to be vigilant everyday and not to wait on mass killings like operation BAD blasts to realise them of their duty. There should also be strict policy from government to give death penalty to all important terrorist leaders and masterminds responsible for innocent killings. Anyways hats off the those policeman who participated in this operation to kill the responsible people and also my best wishes for those policemen who were injured to make this happen.
RECENT BLASTS by JASWANT JASANI on 2008-09-19 17:44:37.748405+05:30
delhi meri jaan is being spoiled by few terrorists which should be dealt with strictly after making necessary amendments in the laws at present. Terrorists should be separated from the Muslim as a whole. For the acts of some bad individuals, you cannot blame the whole community.
Get up Stand Up by Ramesh on 2008-09-19 17:41:44.326518+05:30
Finally our police woke up but it was too late.I just hope that they got the right people. This fight against terrorism needs political will. These are the same people who have created this monster in the name of Vote Bank. What happened in Punjab..they got in one Bhindrawalen to upstage Akalis and he became so strong that he wanted a state of his own. Countless mothers lost their sons/husbands.Widows were born over night. Why was babri masjid allowed to be brought down, were the politicians sleeping when thousands of people descended and brought down an historical building with the whole nation watching. These are some of the instances. Its time that we as people of this great land stand up and voice our opinion as one and make these politicians accountable. We do not have body gaurds or bullet proof vehicles but are victims in their game
Jamia Encounter by Ashok Mehdiratta on 2008-09-19 17:33:26.203269+05:30
Congratulations to DP for this encounter. If two have slipped away please look for them and get rid of them otherwise some future Govt will hand them over back to their outfit.Donot worry about Electronic Media as they will always raise voice against police and the Govt because they are paid for this crap.Govt should look after injured police personnel and give them more power to tackle terrorism. If need be CrPC can be amended to accord them legal protection if by default excess takes place. Some of the channels were deliberately trying to distort the news item by putting words into the mouths of people being interviewed at Jamia.Let Electronic media become more responsible. If it was a frame up,Inspector Sharma would not be in the hospital with bullet injuries and other constable could not pumped bullets into himself. So TV channels should refrain from planting such stories.Donot ever use locals to identify the terrorists as religion is bigger than the nation for some of the minorities.
SHAME - 2 ESCAPED by indian on 2008-09-19 17:13:29.332288+05:30
the Delhi governement needs to explaine HOW 2 TERRORISTS ESCAPED. this would have caused a rage in any other country but we indians are satisified with job half done. its vital that all of the culprits are nabbed
Tougher laws by Sana on 2008-09-19 17:11:42.064969+05:30
Despite the fact that there is evidence that it is forces from outside the country that are instigating terror attacks in India, and knowing that these units are influencing Indian fundamentalist minorities, people still think that somehow they are all innocent victims. Just like there are innocent muslims, there are innocent hindus, christians. To move on with life let's call a spade a spade and have tougher laws for anyone who plays with the security of the country and threatens peace. We do need peope who talk tough because that is only language the terrorists and other trouble makes understand. I am glad that people are noticing this attitude in the UPA government and are forcing the government to act quickly. Let's not lose anymore common people to these terrorists. Too many people are being killed everywhere as it is due to natural disasters. Terrorism is a national threat to every country and it has to be handled so it does not show its face anywhere in the world again!
What about those sloganeers? by Anurag Pathak on 2008-09-19 17:08:46.611816+05:30
It has been reported that some people shouted slogans against the police for allegedly firing at a mosque. At such a grave time when terrorists were killing innocent people and the police were risking their lives to protect us, all that those people could think of was to sloganeer against the police! Those people must be arrested as well, as they are clearly terrorist sympathisers.
What about those sloganeers? by Anurag Pathak on 2008-09-19 17:02:55.850658+05:30
Dushera is fast approaching and two of the demons have been killed. Good start. Hope they'll eliminate many more in the next few days and eventually capture/kill Raavan too.
Terror treatment by Baatul on 2008-09-19 16:56:43.317299+05:30
Though good, its time we need more pro-active steps rather than reactive. The one who reacts always ends up looser.
Delhi hits back by bharat on 2008-09-19 16:52:35.658745+05:30
Home minister of India is acting like a petty tahsildar of Delhi area. He takes action only if Delhi is on fire and only for Delhi. For him Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, bangalore, Mumbai are not under his purview.
UPA leaders are god fathers of terrorists by Mrs Charualata on 2008-09-19 16:05:25.718666+05:30
UPA is a government of terrorist supporters. UPA leaders are supporting Islamic and Christian terrorism on Hindus for gaining their votes.
UPA leaders are promoting Minority Terrorism on Hindus by Mrs Charulata on 2008-09-19 16:01:50.859431+05:30
UPA is government full of minority leaders and Islamists and they are inflaming communal hatred towards under the cover of secularism to gain votes of minorities like Muslims and Christrans. UPA is root of Islamic and Christian Terrorism.
Terrorists slipped thro'? by DR M Mohan Rao. on 2008-09-19 16:00:42.675359+05:30
Having known the previous evening the building where the terorists were holed up and in a planned attack/raid the next day, it is matter of shame that two terorists could escape! It shows sheer incompetency of the police and other agencies involved. Having had lot of time to plan, why they could not throw a large security ring around the area itself and nab the culprits dead or alive with 100% success?? Sheer incompetence!!

gr8 job DP, wake up politicians by Ashwani on 2008-09-19 15:28:19.463838+05:30
Good job done by the Delhi Police, in getting some of the conspirators. I still believe the real story would not be made public in the name of communal peace. The minority community is sceptical and being misguided by some extremists, that is why we do not see a truly national spirit against terrorism. Hindu and Muslims should come together and remove all the hatred/misconceptions between themselves, else the situation would become worse. The citizens of this country should start thinking with their own mind and not listen to politicians/extremists if we want to make India a better place to live in.
Encounter by Sharad C. Misra on 2008-09-19 15:09:50.375662+05:30
The police officers who killed the terrorists deserve to be congratulated! We would urge the UPA Govt. to ensure that the two injured police officers receive the best medical attention. It is good that the two terrorists were finished off. If they were arrested, charge-sheeted, tried in a court of law and eventually sentenced to death the Govt. would have never executed them for fear of losing its minority vote- bank, as in case of Afzal Guru. That would have meant an offence against the Indian tax-payers’ whose hard-earned money would have been spent feeding the criminals and tightening security at the air-ports for fear of hijacking.
