Enforce road rules

It is distressing to note that high-velocity accidents have claimed at least 50 lives in the last six months on the expressway (Pune Newsline dated Jan 29, 2013). Such accidents are taking place frequently. Rash driving, speeding, traffic violations, tyre bursts and poor roadworthiness of vehicles are the main reasons. Callous and careless drivers who speak on cell phones while driving are also responsible. It is not uncommon to see high-end cars speeding way beyond the limit on the right lane. The highway police have suggested a two-foot-high wall to divide the 2-way traffic. This solution is expensive. More than that, it would also be wiser to enforce strict speed limit on vulnerable parts of the road and keep a vigil on drivers. Vigilant highway patrolling with radar guns to check speed of vehicles and CCTV cameras spaced 20-40 km apart are needed to curb accidents. Also, random checks for roadworthiness of vehicles should be carried out. These are much simpler and easy solutions.

Lessons for PMC to take

This refers to the report about six PCMC corporators landing in trouble for allegedly supporting illegal construction. It is a novel way to check corporators doing illegal business and allowing builders to scar the looks of the city. Such checks should be implemented in Pune city as well. The Pune Municipal Corporation has been allowing builders big and small to erect illegal constructions for the past three decades. The area I live is no exception. It's a surprise how the PMC sanctioned the plan. According to the BPMC Act, no illegal structure that encroaches a road should be allowed to stand for more than 15 days.
