Engineer, driver stabbed after ‘minor brush’ of car with autorickshaw

Road rage reared its ugly head yet again with two persons landing in hospital with serious injuries late on Saturday evening. The incident occurred on the Alandi Road when a car and an autorickshaw brushed past each other with none apparently suffering any serious damage. The police called it a "minor brush".

Appasaheb Ravindra Makdum (26), an engineer with a private manufacturing company in Chakan and Balu, and Shivram Gavari (25), the driver of the car he was travelling in, were allegedly stabbed by three men travelling in the autorickshaw, including its driver, after an argument following the "hit". The attackers fled, leaving the injured duo on the road, bleeding. Compounding their miseries, two men came on a motorcycle and first asked for Rs 3,000 to take them to hospital and later robbed them of their cellphones.

The Bhosari police said the incident took place around 9 pm when the two were on their way to Lohegaon to pick up a senior official of the company from the airport.

Inspector (Crime) C D Bhosale said: "A few minutes after they had started from Bhosari, a six-seater rickshaw hit their car from behind. Makdum and Gavari had an argument with the driver of the autorickshaw and two others travelling in it. Though the argument ended soon, the rickshaw driver kept following the car." After travelling a few metres, the rickshaw driver, who was yet to be identified till late Sunday evening, blocked the way of the car at a secluded spot, said the police.

As they got into an argument again, the three travelling in the autorickshaw took out knives and assaulted Gavari. "Makdum got out of the car and was assaulted too. The three then fled in the rickshaw," said Bhosale.

The duo suffered severe injuries in the stomach and were shouting for help when two persons came on a bike and said they would take them to hospital if they were given Rs 3,000, to which Makdum and Gavari agreed, the police said. "Upon reaching Aditya Birla Hospital, the two allegedly started demanding money. As Makdum asked them to wait, they snatched his two cellphones and fled," said the inspector.
