The old saying goes that engineers don’t retire, they just lose their bearings. However, in the Indian PSU sector, they just get relocated. The latest one set to get a new assignment is Ashok Baweja, who retired as chairman of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in March this year. Insiders say that Baweja is the top choice to head a new Indo-Russian joint venture to design and produce a medium transport aircraft. To be set up on the Brahmos model, the new JV will be based in India to build and export a new aircraft in the AN-32 class. The first customer for the aircraft will, of course, be the Indian Air Force. What watchers are looking out for is if the new aircraft will find a larger acceptance, unlike the Brahmos missile, which only has orders from India and is not being considered by the Russian armed forces.
